A man had his little finger chopped "clean off" by a 70-centimetre machete and has lost all feeling in his right hand after he was attacked over a $150 drug debt earlier this month, according to court documents.
The 26-year-old man was allegedly hit with the machete three times at a home in Windale, near Newcastle, on June 16, after an earlier attack in April where he was allegedly stabbed while he slept on a lounge in the same suburb.
David Alexander Sharp, 37, appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday accused of "organising and facilitating" the second attack on the 26-year-old man, which allegedly unfolded at Mr Sharp's home in Balemo Crescent.
Mr Sharp chose to represent himself during a bail application, where he told Magistrate Robert Stone he was unaware there was going to be "an act of violence" at his house when he invited the man over.
He also told the court that his prosthetic glass eye had fallen out and smashed on Tuesday night and he required urgent medical attention.
Mr Sharp has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent. Police allege he acted in company with Paul Dargan, who is said to have wielded the machete.
Mr Dargan, 22, who is also charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent, appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Monday and was refused bail to re-appear on July 6.
Police allege Mr Dargan was also responsible for the first attack on the 26-year-old man on April 1, when the man was woken up by a punch in the head before he was stabbed three times in the arms with a knife.
In police facts tendered to the court, it's alleged the dispute stems from $150 worth of the drug ice owed to a Windale drug dealer by the 26-year-old.
He was allegedly lured to the location of the second attack on June 16 when Mr Sharp sent him a message on Facebook to say he had a buyer who wanted three-and-a-half grams of the drug ice for $1200.
The two men planned to sell the drugs and split the profits.
But when the 26-year-old arrived at Mr Sharp's home, Mr Dargan allegedly leapt out from behind a sheet and charged at him with a machete, asking "Where's the f---ing drugs c---?" and "Do you think I'm f---ing around?"
He is then alleged to have swung the machete at the 26-year-old's head, with the man pulling out of the way and putting his hand up to protect himself.
Court documents state the 70-centimetre blade struck the victim's left hand and chopped his little finger "clean off".
The 26-year-old was also allegedly struck with the machete to the left leg and right hand, with the latter injury severing an artery and causing blood to spurt from the wound.
The blow also severed tendons in his right forearm and hand and the 26-year-old has no feeling or use in his right hand, court documents state.
It's alleged the man was bleeding so much that he was allowed to leave and call an ambulance. His finger was unable to be reattached.
Magistrate Stone refused Mr Sharp bail, citing the seriousness of the allegations and the need to protect the community.
The matter was adjourned to August.
