A rare southern right whale albino calf has been spotted off the south-west coast of WA.
The crew at Whale Watch Western Australia captured footage of the recently born calf, believed to be only three-four weeks old, frolicking with its mother in Flinders Bay, Augusta on Friday.
The calf is predominantly white and looks to have black spots, not unlike Dalmatian dogs.
"It's very, very rare to see an albino calf so we are very excited," Jemma Sharp, whose family runs Whale Watch WA, told WAtoday.
"We are not sure, but we think it could be the first sighting of an albino whale in the area since 2008."
"We don't know if it's a boy or girl yet, but we have named it Pearl.
"Southern white whales are very curious and the mother brought the baby over for us to have a look."
Ms Sharp said what made the sighting of the white whale even more spectacular was that calves were usually born in very secluded bays and less than five per cent of the 3000 population in Australia are albino.
The sighting of the calf comes only days after a white humpback whale was spotted of the coast of NSW, believed to the famous mammal Migaloo.
"We have our own white whale to rival Migaloo over in the east," she laughed.
"The calf and the mother will probably hang around the bay for the next couple of months before migrating to Antarctica.
"We are hoping to get a few more sighting before they migrate."
She said scientists from Murdoch University's Cetacean Research unit had tagged the mother and were hoping to study the small pod over the coming weeks.
