THE Holy Family Primary School community is devastated after fire destroyed a building containing several classrooms on Sunday.
Police were examining the gutted building to determine the cause as the Star went to press yesterday.
Firefighters from six stations were called to the Emert Parade school just before 5pm on Sunday after numerous triple-0 calls.
It took firefighters 90 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
The building, which included two classrooms and a storeroom, couldn't be saved.
About 50 people attending a religious function in the school auditorium at the time of the fire were evacuated.
Investigators were unable to enter the scene for safety reasons until yesterday.
A NSW Fire Brigade spokesman said it was expected the destroyed building would be bulldozed.
The school was closed yesterday but was expected to re-open today.
Parents turned to the St Marys-Mt Druitt Star Facebook page to express their shock.
"My daughter is so upset — all their hard work through the year gone up in smoke," Todd Hackett wrote.
Claire Sheehan added: "My daughter attends that school in year two . . . I think it's horrible."
