Xbox Onesie: how you can get one of your own, and what it's like to wear it

Many derided the onesie as an eyesore, while still more demanded to know when and how they could get one for themselves, which are probably both reactions the PR team was going for. By Wednesday, many outlets in the US and elsewhere overseas were carrying stories, as the trending continued on the back of media and other "influencer" types getting onesies in the mail.

Yet despite saying fans would have a chance to "score their own", Xbox Australia has been quiet on exactly how that would happen, until now.

At 5.30pm today (Thursday), Xbox Australia will announce plans to give a small number of onesies away via its Facebook page. (Update: the relevant post is here.) People who want to win one will have to comment explaining what they like about the One S. A terms and conditions page indicates that only 15 onesies are up for grabs.

If social media reaction is anything to go off there may be quite a few entries as, at the very least, people seem amused by the garment.

Xbox Onesie review

It's more of a promotional item than a consumer product, and it wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for the punny promotion of the Xbox One S, but I did test it out for a night so I'll be damned if I'm not going to review this clown suit.

You will look like a fat astronaut or a felt racecar driver in this thing, there's no getting around that. It's fancier-looking than your standard onesie, and has your Xbox gamertag embroidered on it, but it's still a onesie.

The truth, though, is that it's pretty good. Good in that onesie way where you hate to admit it's comfortable and warm and fun. Where you tell yourself you hate it because it looks stupid but deep down you hate it because it represents your potential — lurking just beneath the surface at all times — to give up on polite society and live a life of obesity, Netflix, service apps and video games. You could you know.

The hood is big enough to accommodate headphones and all four cuffs are roll-upable for when you need to get real / when you need to get ventilated. I'm not convinced the reinforced forearms serve any purpose, but when you roll the sleeves they become elbow pads, so I guess it's good for leaning forward and resting your elbows on your knees with intensity.

There's a big pocket each for a remote and a controller, sized to fit the official Xbox hardware of course. I'm not sure why you can't put that stuff on the couch next you or on the floor, but hey I'm wearing a onesie so I won't judge your life choices. There's also separate pockets for your hands.

The final pocket, on the upper arm, is for your phone. It's a smart place to put it — accessible but out of the way — however the harsh velcro made me unwilling to put my phone in there. I used it to store nutbars. (Speaking of which, mine is black but if you manage to get one it may be white, which will obviously limit your snack options).

In summary, as far as hokey video game promotional items go, it's comfy and surprisingly utilitarian in a never-outside-the-house way. I've no doubt it would make a good replacement for the pyjamas you usually play video games in, supposing you're not precious about looking like a giant baby human billboard.
