THE Blacktown Cancer Council Relay for Life 10th anniversary event will take place at Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney during the weekend of October 27 and 28, 2012.
Relay for Life is an annual community event when friends, family, community groups, schools and businesses enter a team to walk in a relay around the athletics track over a 24-hour period to raise funds for the Cancer Council.
Mayor of Blacktown City, Councillor Len Robinson congratulated the Blacktown City community and the Relay for Life Committee on their work over the past 10 years.
"The committee has worked very hard and the results have been fantastic," he said.
The event brings the whole community together for a night of fun, entertainment, celebration and remembrance.
The focus of the event, which is open to people of all ages, is on remembering and celebrating the lives of those who have been touched by cancer, and to raise funds to provide much needed research, education and support services.
In the past 10 years, the Blacktown Relay has raised more than $1.45 million.
So far the 2012 Blacktown Relay For Life has raised almost $192,000 through fundraising events such as the annual Golf Day in May which saw Sargents Charitable Foundation donate $100,000 and the 10th Anniversary Dinner in August which raised more than $14,000.
The 2012 Relay For Life starts at 9.30am with Survivors and Carers participating in the first lap of the day.
The candlelight Hope Ceremony at 8pm will be a touching ceremony to remember those who have lost their fight with cancer followed by a spectacular fireworks display to inspire and celebrate those who are battling or have beaten the disease.
