Lucky escape: The driver crashed into three parked cars and a brick pylon in front of Colyton shops on Tuesday night
Police urge motorists to take care on the road after two serious crashes in the space of four hours last Tuesday.
Five people were taken to hospital when a red Mazda sedan collided with pantech truck on Coonwarra Drive, St Clair last Tuesday afternoon.
‘‘We believe the rental truck was doing a U-turn and the Mazda sedan was unable to stop in time,’’St Marys Detective acting Inspector Brad Element said.
The Careflight helicopter was initially called but five people in the Mazda were taken to hospital by road ambulance.
The driver suffered a broken leg, while passengers’ injuries included a broken wrist, a broken arm, soft tissue damage and lacerations.
‘‘We will continue our investigations before deciding any charges will be laid.’’ Detective acting Inspector Brad Element said.
There was an another near tragedy at Colyton shops a few hours later at 7.25pm.
Police said a man, 78, lost control of his silver Ford while reversing from a parking space.
His car collided with three parked vehicles in the car park and a brick pylon at the front of the shops.
The driver and passenger were treated for minor injuries and taken to hospital as a precaution.
One witnesses was on the footpath, metres away from where the car stopped.
‘I thought the driver may have had a fit or passed out,’’ she said.
‘‘You could the woman passenger screaming over the squeal of the brakes. There was glass everywhere. The cops closed the takeaway shop for a while because of safety reasons with the pylon.’’
Police are investigating both collisions.
