A cup of coffee and cake wasn’t the only reason for people who got together for morning tea last Friday.
Ability Options and Anglicare Mount Druitt were among 1700 venues across Australia to host DisabiliTEAs to raise awareness of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
This event was part of Every Australian Counts, a national campaign for the scheme.
Now in its second year, nationwide tea party was held to call on the federal government to provide ‘dollars and dates’ to guarantee the scheme becomes a reality over the next five years.
The Hunter will be the first NSW region to be part of the scheme in 2013-14.
It’s not known when Sydney will become part of the scheme.
Federal Chifley MP Ed Husic was among 40 guests at the Ability Options Mount Druitt morning tea to show his support for the scheme.
Josh Frost spoke at the Anglicare event about how the Special Olympics has helped him.
Josh, 29, has an intellectual disability and has working at McDonalds for 11 years.
‘The scheme will be good for the disability sector,’’ Josh’s mum Denise said.
‘‘It will provide services for people with disabilities and support for companies taking on disabled employees. Josh doesn’t use as many services now that’s older but it will good to know there will be services out there.’’
