A first half double for fullback Mason Cerruto has helped St Marys start the Ron Massey Cup season with a 14-6 win over defending premiers Mounties.
After a first round wash out and second round bye, the game was St Marys’ first game of the season.
Coach Brad Drew said he was happy with the performance.
“It was really our first hit out of the year,” he said.
“They have a big pack and they really belted us in the second half. I’m really happy with how we held that pressure.”
St Marys, who finished its first season in the Ron Massey Cup in 2016 as runners up, started strongly.
However, several handling errors within the Saints attacking zone kept the game scoreless for the first quarter of the match.
Cerruto slid through the Mounties defence after 27 minutes to open the scoring, before scoring his double off a lucky ricochet eight minutes later.
“He just stuck his leg out but you’ve got to be there to score them,” Cerruto said of his second try.
“It’s always good to score in the colours. It’s good to get the boys the win as well.”
While Mounties scored early in the second half to reduce the deficit to six points, a late penalty goal following a short goal line drop out gave St Marys a winning lead.
St Marys host the unbeaten Hills Bulls at St Marys Leagues Stadium on Saturday at 6pm.
