The Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the signing of former La Liga striker Oriol Riera for the next two seasons.

It’s a coup for the Wanderers, who were often criticised for their ability to score goals last season.

Riera, 31, told the Sydney Morning Herald he decided to make the move to the A-League due to the Wanderers ambition to play like Barcelona.

“They convinced me that they want me to come here and they want to play like Barcelona's school,” he said.

“For me, playing like this, remembering how we played at Barcelona, keeping the ball, I know this football so it's easy to play like they want to."

The Spanish striker has played 102 games in La Liga, scoring 23 goals and arrives at the club from Deportivo de la Coruna.

Riera started his career at the Barcelona youth academy and previously played for teams such as Wigan in the English Championship and Alcorcon and Cordoba in the Spanish Segunda.

He also represented the Catalonian national team on two occasions.

Wanderers chief executive John Tsatsimas said Riera brings a strong record with him to the club.

"Oriol has an exceptional pedigree and will no doubt enhance our playing strength and provides us with a great platform to be serious contenders at the business end of the season,” he said.

Riera is set to make his Wanderers debut in a friendly match against Arsenal on Saturday, July 14.
