Police are urging motorists not to leave children unattended in vehicles as temperatures soar for the second straight day.
The warning comes after police broke into a 42-year-old man's car after he allegedly left his three-year-old son inside the vehicle while he visited a licensed premises in Sydney's south-west on Saturday afternoon.
The alleged incident came as temperatures soared to 32.2 degrees on Saturday afternoon.
"Police would like to remind motorists that it is unsafe in any circumstances to leave a child unattended in a vehicle," a police spokesperson said.
Temperatures inside the car could have reached as high as 70 degrees in as little as five minutes, police said.
The man allegedly parked on the Hume Highway before entering the premises, believed to be the Hume Hotel in Yagoona.
It is also alleged that the man left his two-year-old son unattended at his Yagoona home at the same time.
Both children were taken to Bankstown Hospital for assessment.
Family and Community Services were notified by police and are investigating.
The man has been refused bail and was charged with leaving a child in a motor vehicle causing distress, neglecting a child in his care and resisting arrest.
