AT first the task of DIY painting can seem like a daunting one, particularly if you are unsure of which colour scheme you should go for.
Wattyl has been painting homes for 100 years and Wattyl colour expert Sarah Stephenson knows a thing or two about choosing colours for your DIY project.
She says the key is to think about the mood you want to create.
"If you are unsure where to start, create a mood board of colour to help you discover a theme to your style.
"Generally speaking cooler colours such as blues and greens, relax us and warmer reds and oranges uplift us.
"If you're looking to create a spa like feeling in a bathroom, you might look at cool aquas and green.
"Conversely, a children's play area will benefit from strong colour bursts."
Stephenson suggests that whites and neutrals as an overall scheme work well to freshen up your interior, and deeper shades can be added behind furniture such as couches or beds for a sophisticated look.
"Remember that all whites and neutrals carry an undertone, so if you have warm toned floorboards, stick to whites that carry a small amount of warmth to them.
"If you have slate tiles or CaesarStone that contains a lot of grey fleck, then look at a white or neutral that contains a cooler undertone.
"For exterior colour palettes, most popular are cool tones, deep greys and even black for the adventurous. Trimmed with fresh white around windows, these shades give a sense of luxury.
"Paint is an inexpensive and impactful way to refresh and change the look and feel in your home and if you're savvy with the colours you choose, you won't have to paint again for years to come."
