SYDNEY'S suburbs are humming with a sound not normally heard until summertime — airconditioning units working hard to keep people cool during the unseasonably warm days so far this spring.
There's also a good deal of heated discussion around the cost of keeping cool.
But Energy Australia product and sales manager Gavin Lewis said there were ways to keep household temperatures cooler this summer, without cranking up the airconditioner.
1. Set temperatures on the airconditioner around 24-25 degrees. This can cut cooling costs by 10 per cent.
2. Only cool the areas people are in by using zoned cooling or alternating between separate units.
3. Use window coverings that fit snugly around windows. This can reduce seasonal heat exchange by almost half. Blinds with light-coloured backings on window-facing sides deflect sun heat.
4. Close windows, lower blinds and close off rooms not in use.
5. Plant shade trees, wall vines and thick shrubs to cover windows, walls and roofs. This can cool a home by up to 12 degrees.
6. Exterior shades or awnings can reduce room temperature by up to three degrees.
7. Use fans to cool down.
8. Check the insulation in ceilings and walls. The better the insulation, the more likely cool air will stay where it's needed
9. Draught-proof your home if you use an airconditioner to ensure refrigerated air stays inside.
