Sam Groth may be the fastest server on the planet but Australia's Davis Cup star was focused on breaking opponents, not records at the Canberra Challenger this week.
Groth fired down some thunderbolts during practice at the Canberra Tennis Centre on Sunday, but the 193cm power-hitter said he was saving his real cannons for showtime.
"You don't want to be firing too early on a Sunday morning, it's all about what happens on Monday or Tuesday or next weekend," Groth said.
"Canberra has great conditions for me with the heat and a little bit of altitude which helps the serve, so I'm looking forward to the week."
Groth, 29, said he was proud of the record 263.4km/h bomb he fired in South Korea back in 2012, but downplayed setting a new record in Canberra.
"I think I'm serving smarter than I was when I served the record and for me it's not always about how fast you hit it anymore," Groth said.
"It's nice to be serving 240km/h-plus and the record is nice to have but for me now it's about winning matches. If that means taking a few clicks off it and hitting my spots more often and holding my serve more often then that's the priority now rather than serving another record."
Groth is currently ranked No.180 in the world, but in November 2015 he'd climbed to a career-high 53 before a foot injury derailed his 2016 campaign.
He was hoping to force his way back into the men's top 100 and viewed the Canberra tournament as an important cog in kick-starting his resurgence.
"I feel like I'm playing better than 180 in the world and I've proven I can get close to 50. Now I want to get back into the top 100 as quickly as possible and start getting direct entry into the slams again," Groth said.
"You come into every tournament trying to win and it's good conditions for me here but I'm not going to put a number on where I think I should get to.
"I just want to play good tennis and it's all about prepping for the Australian Open, a win would be nice but I'll take it as it comes."
Groth spent four years in the nation's capital at the Australian Institute of Sport and was impressed with the upgraded facilities at Lyneham.
"I haven't been here since it's been done up so it was a big surprise for me when I turned up, it's a great facility now and it's good to see some world class tennis in Canberra," he said.
Groth caught up with Davis Cup teammate Nick Kyrgios on Saturday and confirmed the world No.13 would overcome a knee injury in time for the Australian Open.
"I had a chat to Nick yesterday [Saturday], we get along great and it was good to see him out here having fun while he's back home and with a few days rest he'll be ready for the Aussie," Groth said.
Kyrgios was courtside on Sunday watching childhood friend James Frawley defeat Jake Delaney 6-4, 7-6 to book his spot in Monday's main draw.
It marked Frawley's first Challenger berth and the 22-year-old agreed qualifying for his home tournament marked the best singles result of his career.
"Nick came to watch the tiebreaker which gave me a boost and it's my best pro tour result so I'm pretty pumped up, it feels good," Frawley said.
"Now I've just got to take the same game plan into this week, keep playing aggressive tennis and see what happens."
